Influences Upon Environments and Wildlife

The seasons completely govern wildlife activities and movements, so it is important to time your visit according to what you most want to see and do.
Fifteen distinct ecological zones, from swamp to desert contain around 2000 botanical species which support 292 recorded land mammals and over 1000 bird species. Visitor expectations can be disappointed if arriving at the inappropriate place or season.
However, with a good professional guide and travel advice, you can visit Africa at any time and still have a very rewarding experience.
The very general seasonal guideline for game viewing is:
- Spring and Summer - (October to May)
This is the best time for baby animals. Its hot and its wet (in some places, too wet). The sun/rain/sun cycle makes the bush grow fast and dense, and game viewing becomes harder. Deserts sometimes bloom; floodplains flood; bird and insect life is prolific.
- Autumn and Winter - (June to September)
Sunny most of the time, can be cold at night. The foliage has been grazed and browsed, thus increasing visibility. Surface water dries up and wildlife starts to congregate in the vicinity of remaining water pans and rivers.
