Mowani Mountain Camp - Twyfelfontain Conservancy in Damaraland "I flew to Twyfelfontain to see and feel rock engravings, burnt mountains and petrified forests. I landed in Twyfelfontain Valley to stay at Mowani Mountain Camp. It was here that I was introduced to the rare and unique "Welwitchia" plant. The area is open, arid and harsh with towering, bare, rocky mountains. Silent footsteps of the desert elephant criss-cross the dry, ancient riverbeds. The local Damara people refer to this area as 'The Place of God' and with all the peace and tranquillity, I began to understand why. The prehistoric engravings are best viewed in the afternoon as during the morning hours the valley is in shadow. Mowani's central area is cleverly comprised of a collection of domed thatch structures that blend easily with the surrounding giant boulders. Secluded, tented accommodation nestles comfortably between boulders. The evening view from the top of the main camp boulder calmed my spirit."
