"What can I say? It's the biggest country in Southern Africa, with a cosmopolitan infrastructure, many different tribes (the constitution acknowledges eleven official languages!), flat to mountainous to two big contrasting oceans to desert and it's a credit card paradise! When South Africa acquired independence in 1994 the doors opened to international tourism. Lodges have been developed with distinct imagination and comfort.

When I was eleven my parents sent me on the SA Vaal cruise ship from Durban, South Africa to Southampton in England. My deepest regret is that I was not older to appreciate this magnificently decorated ship, and truly comprehend the distance covered and the route taken.

South Africa's history has been influenced by very early pioneers trekking from its extreme Southern point into 'darkest Africa' and courageous battles for land and mineral wealth. While different battles raged between famous combatants such as Shaka Zulu, the Boers, the British and other brave characters the French Huguenots were quietly planting vineyards, which proudly produce excellent wines to this day.

The indigenous people of this country still embrace their culture as they often talk of Mujaji (the Rain Queen) and the Venda people continue to practice their traditional ceremonies. This is a richly diverse country. "
