Ruckomechi Camp - Mana Pools (a World Heritage site) "Ruckomechi is part of the spectacular Mana Pools, on the Zambezi River flood plain. The area is blanketed with a forest of tall Mahogany and Albida trees. Scattered beneath the trees is one of nature's finest examples of a pristine wilderness, mammal's zoo. My first expedition into this amazing flood plain was by foot in the late 1970s, when I was privileged to encounter several Black Rhinoceros. Hopefully one day they shall be reintroduced, as has been the case in other areas of Zimbabwe. Elephants, lion, buffalo and leopard are a strong element of the wildlife population and the Zambezi River supports an unending orchestra of (rude and ribald) hippo noises. Ten comfortable and private thatched en suite chalets, all have a spectacular view of the prominent Zambian escarpment, across the Zambezi river. The honeymoon suite has an open-air bath from which game viewing can be a little distracting, especially if a romantic plunge is on the agenda!!! My passion for the bush means I concentrate a lot of attention upon the activities and Ruckomechi kept me fully occupied: walking, fishing, canoeing, boating, game drives and a birding mecca. Everywhere I go I try to list at least 100 birds. At Mana Pools I exceeded this target!" (Colin Bristow) Map of Zimbabwe map opens in new window (60k)
