Destination ZIMBABWE

Once upon a time Zimbabwe was Africa's top coffee table book destination. Now, off the radar screen, it still is one of the best safari destinations in Africa. If you know it. The national parks are big and undeveloped. You will still find a cantankerous black rhino thundering through dense undergrowth. Your experienced khaki-clad safari guides will show you all. The majesty of the Victoria Falls Hotel will remind you of the ageless grace of British colonialism.

From the Captain's Blog:

"Arriving at Chitake Springs just after sunset, we reflect, with our feet submerged in cool clear spring water, about the flight from the Victoria Falls down the Zambezi River to the Mana floodplain and then the drive to Chitake.

Like little grey ghosts, thirty-eight wild dogs mysteriously joined us for sundowners. One of them suddenly racing across the water and caught an impala a few meters from where we were sitting.

Two large lionesses raced through our sundowner "relaxed social think tank" and pounced on the impala, scattering the dogs. A young elephant cow, upset with the dog and lion activity, stormed in with long blood-curdling trumpets and rumbles.

A few minutes later a spotted hyena trotted back into the spring with the same impala in its jaws. It was now too dark to see the next event so we poured a fresh round of "Giraffe and Tonic" in the camp candlelight."

Have I told you lately why I love Africa?
